C wins the Programming Language of the Year Award for 2019
The TIOBE Index has announced that the Programming Language of the Year 2019 was awarded to C. Many predicted that as the winner of the programming language in 2018, Python would take the prize again, but they have been proven wrong. Over 2019 C had a yearly increase of 2.4%, whereas the runner ups C# had an increase of 2.1% and Python just 1.4%.
So why did it go so well for C?
Where Python won in 2018 for its popularity and usage in machine learning and data science, C won thanks to its usage in embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). The current trend and the huge number of intelligent devices that are online today are big drivers behind this increase in the use of C for programming, and the language especially stands out when used for small, performance-critical devices.
